Healing Powers of Garlic

Ever since I was  a little girl I can remember my mom, dad, grandparents and aunts taking garlic capsules.  If we would start to get sick, out came the garlic capsules.  My little cousin would take the little oil filled capsules even as a todder.  She would just pop them in her mouth and chew them up! She thought it was really fun to blow her garlic breath on you when she was done!

Garlic capsules are still a mainstay in my vitamin cabinet.  I have recently been seeing more and more on garlic so thought I would share some of the things I have been reading!

There are many properties that make fresh garlic a powerful healer.   Allicin and sulfur compounds of garlic are the ingredients primarily responsible for garlic's potency. Allicin is a strong antibiotic agent produced when the alliin and alliinase are merged together. The merging happens when a fresh garlic clove is crushed or chewed.

My family has always used garlic as an a immunity stimulant and to combat sicknesses such as colds and flu.  Garlic can be used as a prevention for some types of cancer, anitbitotic, anti-viral, treating high blood pressure, lowering cholesterol, and a fungicide.

Eve at The Spring Of Life discusses the powers and uses for garlic.  She also gives lots of different ways to prepare your own garlic.  I have always used the oil filled garlic capsules that my family grew up using, but after reading Eve's page I might make a few of her concoctions!  She even lists some things such as eating apples afterwards that will help you avoid garlic breath!

Tammy Motteshard has written a very informative article on garlic and its many uses which is posted at Herbal Legacy.  In her article she discusses garlic as a treatment of heavy metal poisoning and Candida (yeast) among many other things.   This article is packed with great information and lots of researched ailments that garlic has helped.

I can't remember where I read it, but I recall reading that France is the country that uses the most garlic and also the country with very low incidence of cancer.  Tammy Motteshards article mentioned above lists some of the things that even the American Cancer Society have said about the use of garlic with cancer and cancer prevention.

Once you have read these articles you will see why I keep garlic in my daily routine!  Garlic is beneficial for more than just cooking!
